So Why Do We Buy Mattresses On President's Day?

For most President's Day is not just about celebrating George Washington's Birthday or even having the day off of work/ school for that matter. Most likely, you've seen those President's Day mattress sale commercials at least once over weekend. Traditionally, President's Day also seems as if it's the national day for mattress sales, but why?

Many believe a big part of it has to do with the timing of tax refund season. People tend to use that money to purchase big-ticket items such as mattresses and furniture for themselves, versus other holidays geared toward shopping, where consumers tend to focus on purchasing smaller gifts for others.

Perhaps an even larger contributing factor is the price of mattresses. With most ranging from $800-$1200, this kind of pricey purchase is not an impulse buy. A three-day weekend allows consumers to think before they buy.  A mattress is a product that people interact with every day,  it's an important part of life after all. People would use their three-day weekend to go to a mattress store and shop. Having this extra day gives individuals and their significant other a chance to check out the mattress together.

Whether you're spending this President's Day shopping or staying at home, remember... today is a day to celebrate the Presidents too.
