Last year 11-year-old Zumyah Thorpe was involved in a drunk driving accident where she lost her pregnant mother and two of her sisters. While Zumyah and her older sister survived, Zumyah was left with a traumatic brain injury that left her motor and language skills impaired.
Eventually, doctors discovered that despite her trouble talking, Zumyah could sing every word to Bruno Mars' “Just The Way You Are”. Ever since that moment his music has played an important role in Zumyah's recovery.
Dr. Nancy Bass, a pediatric neurologist, said, “I am absolutely convinced that singing those Bruno Mars songs and being able to say 'Bruno Mars' is in itself a miracle and knowing all the words to the songs has helped her recover.”
When Mars heard about her story he arranged a meeting with her and her family. Zumyah also attended his Cleveland concert where Mars made a dedication to the young girl and serenaded her with “Just The Way You Are”. Mars posted a picture to Instagram of the pair captioned “Tonight’s show was dedicated to this amazing woman. I Love you Zumyah.”
Mars couldn't have been more right when he called her, "an inspiration to the world." If you haven't already, grab some tissues because you can watch the amazing concert moment below:
